Darkling Door 6485

Darkling Door has a newer deck inspired by this one: Warriors of the West

This is the multiplayer brothers deck I built to go with my wife's Spirit/Lore Erestor deck for The Grey Havens. It was a pretty great combat deck, well-suited to all three quests, so I'll probably keep using it for our first playthrough of the Dreamchaser quests as well.

General Strategy

Amarthiúl makes a great partner for the brothers. I typically try to keep two weaker enemies to get the extra resource and allow Amarthiúl to provide resource smoothing. Elrohir makes it pretty easy to tank those extra enemies round after round without too much sweat. When the pressure gets to be too much, Elladan and Amarthiúl can clean house.

Spending Resources

When deciding between spending resources on something now or holding on to those resources for an emergency, lean towards saving the resources. Use Feint, Sneak Attack, Descendants of Kings, and Ranger of Cardolan as emergency defense when you get an enemy that Elrohir can't safely tank or an enemy you really have to kill this turn. If you didn't end up needing the resource, then that's a bonus resource you can use to put down something even better next turn.

Attachments

Elven Spear was primarily included for playing across table, but don't hesitate to put it on Elladan if you need it to trigger Foe-hammer or to kill something big.

Typically I mulligan for a weapon, because it's really annoying to get Foe-hammer in hand and not be able to use it.

Have you found Sword of Numenor worth it? I would cut one copy of that card, I think. I would also cut 1 copy of Foe-hammer since you have only 6 weapons in the deck. Maybe replace those with Ranger Summons? You could even add in a copy of Gimli (ToS) for fun. :)

@Mythdracon In the first incarnation of this deck, I omitted Foe-hammer since I only had weapons in the deck for Elladan and I couldn't guarantee they would show up. I was using Dúnedain Mark as my primary boosting card in the hopes that it could be fetched by the Weather Hills Watchman.

In practice, the watchman whiffed more often than not, and while the deck performed admirably, I was having trouble mustering high enough values to kill really big enemies reliably.

I actually fixed this problem by swapping the Sword of Númenor in instead of the Dúnedain Mark, and adding Foe-hammer to increase the deck's overall consistency. The ability on the Sword is just gravy--it triggers maybe 1-3 times per game.

6 weapons seems to be enough to be able to reliably trigger Foe-hammer most of the time. According to the handy little odds calculator here on RingsDB, I should have a 62% chance of getting a weapon in my first hand. Add to that a mulligan, plus the fact that I can fetch them with Galadriel or other card draw and I think the math checks out to match my experience.

I absolutely love Ranger Summons, although when I use it I'm finding it to be a little inconsistent if I don't pair it with some encounter manipulation cards like Denethor. You could probably cut Weather Hills Watchman for it if you wanted to fit it in.

Gimli would do fine in this deck. I might consider cutting a copy of Faramir for him.

Thanks for the suggestions!

And whos questing?

May 09, 2016 Darkling Door 6485

@Mablung For the most part, it's best to pair this deck with another deck that can handle the bulk of the questing duties, but in the early game I often found myself sending Elladan and sometimes even Elrohir on the quest to help with any early-game deficits. You can usually handle a surprise emergency defense if anything nasty shows up.

Beyond that you can send a few allies here and there to make a small contribution, but you're really relying on the other deck to do the heavy lifting during the quest phase.
