Seastan's Boromir 2-handed

Seastan 44530

Description

Here is the 2-handed version of my Solo Boromir deck.

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZwK8YpTkfY

The pairing here is so strong that I would stand by the statement that it could beat any quest, Nightmare included, even if you were to play as if there were three people in the game. It's already been tested in this mode of play against some of the hardest quests in the game, like The Battle of Carn Dûm. Against standard quests in regular two-player mode it will just embarrass the encounter deck.

Basic Instructions: Boromir starts as first player. Mulligan for Dunedain Signal or Peace and Thought. Spirit player mulligans for Arwen, unless the Boromir player found a Signal. If so, mulligan for Brand/Song of Wisdom/Master of the Forge.

Get the following on Boromir ASAP, in this priority:

Use Beravor to draw all the time. The Aragorn player normally needs it more because they don't have Peace, and Thought.

Theodred's resource goes on Boromir 70% of the time, at least until he has a large pool. The rest of the time it generally goes on one of the Aragorn's player's heroes. Note that Theodred can only give a resource to the Aragorn player on rounds where Aragorn is first player.

Click on the individual decks for more deck-specific strategy.

Note: The two decks are fully dependent upon one another for attachments, and should only played together. For a solo deck of the same style, see my deck linked above.

I just finished watching the video and I have to say that was an impressive display of power. All in all, great decks and great explanations. Thanks a lot.

@stokesbookLast time I tried a 2-handed victory display deck a card got errata'd...

Congrats on the impressive deck building but I hope Caleb or someone erratas Boromir by limiting the number of times he can use his action; these deck's just destroy the game.

Hey There Seastan!

Just played these decks last night with my son and had a super time! Thanks so much! I wonder if I had all the rules down properly. Do you mind answering these questions? 1. Blood of Numenor and Gondorian Fire--Is it proper to stack multiple of these onto Boromir--each giving it's bonus (if you pay the price for each)? 2. Song of Eärendil -- there is no benefit to stacking these, right? Again, many thanks!

@lancemoodyGlad you are having a good time!

  1. Correct
  2. Each Song of Earendil can transfer only one threat to the other player whenever threat is raised by any amount. So if you are only ever increasing your threat by increments of 1 (Boromir, end of turn, etc) there is no benefit to multiple copies. On the other hand, the doomed cards can raise your threat by 2 or 4, making multiple copies of the song useful. But I would not make them a very high priority.

Couldn't you use two Song of Earendils from a 1 threat increase to actually lower the other players threat? I decided I wanted to try and build a deck to make my friend playing a modified version of your solo Boromir deck to drop his threat to 1, probably by abusing a wandering took with 1 or more songs. I ended up finding this and we will probably try out these decks instead.

I do have a question, starting threat is calculated when setting up the game correct? So loragorns ability instantly used with tactics Eoywn would increase your threat by 3 first turn?

If i place The Fall of Gil-Galad on Loragorn, use his ability myself and then a Desperate Alliance to give it to him can he use its ability and kill him off resetting his threat to 25 (not calculating the 4th hero he controls atm) then reducing his threat by 12 to have 13 total threat? Only 2 greeting away from the goal :) Then if I revive loragorn he is a new instance of the card and we could both use his ability again right?

Lastly would you add in the newly spoiled "Song of Hope" in this deck? could go very well on Boromir and a 2nd could go on Theodred for a final push.

  1. Yes, two Songs of Earendil can be used like that. But I believe Wandering Took will receive an errata at some point so for longevity's sake I avoid using that combo.
  2. Correct, Loragorn does not play nice with TEowyn.
  3. I don't see a problem with your Gil-Galad strategy. But reviving Loragorn would not allow you to use his ability again since "once per game" effects are tied to the player not the card.
  4. For a final questing push with Boromir, Grappling Hook is a much better option since he already has Gondorian Fire. Even Song of Travel with Lay of Nimrodel is better than Song of Hope for that purpose.

Ok thanks! #3 makes sense as thats how Desperate Alliance works in the first place.

@SeastanAre there any recent cards you'd consider subbing in, like heed the dream for example?

What is the "We Are Not Idle" Card for? I don't see any Dwarf characters at all

You can exhaust zero Dwarf characters to gain zero resources and draw one card.

Good Lord. Just looking at these deck builds makes my eyes glow! I've recently come to the conclusion that it's an absolute must to play LOTR two-handed. I can't beat scenarios on Easy mode using just one deck and 3 heroes. Now my question is: where can we find these cards? Is it the same for your single-handed Boromir deck? (2 Core sets and up to Celebrimbor's Secret?)

Mar 09, 2018 pd187540 42

Interestingly, none of the heros is marked with "Ranged", and there are enemies in later expansions that can only be defeated with ranged attacks. Yet two of the heros here are Rangers. So does this mean they can actually do ranged attacks? If not, then I'm guessing there are other cards in these decks that can dispose of those ranged-only enemies?

Mar 09, 2018 pd187540 42

Now that Boromir has been errata'd, how does this affect the power of these 2 decks @Seastan?

Mar 09, 2018 Seastan 44530

@pd187540Enemies that can only be killed via characters with ranged can be killed by these decks via Gandalf or Dúnedain Cache. The Ranger trait has no connection to the ranged keyword.

The errata to Boromir severely impacts the power of these decks. The relied on him to do the defending and attacking for both players, which is obviously not feasible anymore.

Mar 09, 2018 pd187540 42

@Seastanthanks. I bought a second core set solely for the use of these decks, and now they're not strong anymore (or as strong, rather). Hopefully you come up with a newly revised deck that's just as strong or stronger.

For now, I will treat Boromir as if it has not been errata'd. I'm keeping it exactly how it's written. I emailed FFG asking for a replacement Boromir card (I said that the adventure pack I bought didn't come with that hero card). So if I get the new hero card in the mail with the appropriately errata'd text, only then will I accept his new "limit once per phase" ability.

@pd187540 You seem focused on building the most powerful decks possible. Given the current errata, I'd say the strongest deck archetypes in the game right now are Ents, Caldara, Outlands, and Vilya. Here are some good examples:

Vilya: ringsdb.com

Ent: ringsdb.com

Caldara: ringsdb.com

Outlads: ringsdb.com

Mar 09, 2018 pd187540 42

@SeastanThat Caldara deck looks really good. "The new deck to rule them all," as you claim. Outlands looks great as well. Perhaps one of those decsk paired with your Boromir deck would make a killer combo.

And about the "sideboard" thing I'm always seeing on here, I haven't discovered what that is. Beorn wrote an article about it, but his explanation was scant. If you can enlighten me on how to "sideboard", when/if you can do it, that would be great.

Oh, and Beorn stated this: 'As much as some players might seek the holy grail of deck-building, there is no “one deck to rule them all”.' I disagree with that.

Mar 09, 2018 Seastan 44530

@pd187540 There have always been decks that beat nearly every quest in the game. There are some quests though that demand certain deck types and strategies, which is perhaps what Beorn meant. The huge healing requirement of Journey to Rhosgobel is an example of this. Most decks do not include Lore of Imladris, but that card is amazing for that specific quest.

And that's what a sideboard is all about. It's a set of cards that you don't include in your deck most of the time, but when you do need, say, more healing for a specific quest, you swap in some healing cards from your sideboard and swap out some other cards that are going to be less useful.

Mar 09, 2018 pd187540 42

@SeastanI see. So you can't swap the cards mid-game. They're just there to modify the base deck in between quests.
