This has to be one of my favorite mono tactics deck. I looked to see if anyone had thought of teaming up Dori with Grimbeorn the Old with any success and found a few decks published. This iteration was inspired by Grandson of Gror, who has a solid monotactics deck swapping out Aragorn for Éowyn. His description said the deck struggled with questing, so I sought to remedy that with Forth, The Three Hunters!.
This is REALLY fun to play. It had absolutely no issue with Journey Down the Anduin and Into the Pit.
The idea is that Grimbeorn is a solid defender and attacker out the gate, and can handle some middle-tier enemies without issue. If a boss fight happens, Dori is there to add his defense to Grimbeorn. Therefore, all defense attachments go to Dori, and all attack boosts go to Grimbeorn.
In my limited experience, Beorn's Welcome pays for itself pretty quickly, so you wouldn't be mad to see that in your opening hand. Early game questing might struggle a little, so you might mulligan for Strider. I hate to include dead cards, so I only included one copy of "limit 1 per" or unique. The exception is Ring of Thrór, one of my personal favorites. In a three hunters deck, Ring of Thror takes care of the contract and the readying issues, at a small price of one extra card in the staging area. If you are lucky, it's attached to an enemy and can be dispatched of quickly.
Grimbeorn gets the ring and Strength and Courage. That means he defends for 3 (or 5 with Dori) and can attack for essentially 9 (3 base + 1 SaC static + 3 SaC exhaust + 2 enemy defense drop). Keep an eye on your threat. I haven't had to trigger Eowyn, so I've kept my threat low. Favor of the Valar works hard at the end of the game!
If you start swimming in cash, don't be afraid to play Hour of Wrath outside of Valor. If you are dealing with a swarm, chances are Grimbeorn can handle it even with his only base 3 defense. Dori won't be a slouch on defending either if you are running low on actions. Load up your heroes with restricted attachments, golden belts, and anything else you can legally play.
I am debating including a couple copies of Mighty Warrior so that these other attachments can go on the other heroes. I might have to sacrifice some of the events to get there.
P.S. I know the deck is mostly centered around Grimbeorn, but come on... how often do you see a SOLID Dori deck?? Gotta give him props!

Apr 15, 2025would make it nearly the same except a few alterations: Citadel Plate is to expensive for my taste without Beregond would add a 3. Gondorian Shield and either a Round Shield or Hold Your Ground! would replace 1 War Axe with another Round Shield or Hold Your Ground! (with this event you could theoreticially use Doris ability against 2 attacks or ready a sentinel against an attack) Raven-winged Helm is not restricted, would not use it. it is imo overall to expensive except for Beregond would add 2 other restricted, perhaps another Elven Mail or specially if playing solo think about Blade of Gondolin |
Apr 15, 2025Thanks for the recommendations, I assume you can't trigger Round Shield on Dori after he triggers his ability, so it would only be useful if he is the designated defender. Or it's just a free restricted attachment for Éowyn which is fine, too. Great suggestion on Hold Your Ground!. That honestly works as well, if not better than, Feint. |
Apr 15, 2025double-dori is meant for Hold Your Ground! |
Apr 16, 2025This is a nice deck, som good ideas and a nice stack of synergies! |
Eowyn and the contract for questing... great idea and it looks like a lot of fun. And, like you said, Dori goes to battle!
