my version of "making gollum great again". first, he was never great except perhaps 1 moment he bit of a finger and stumbelt into the volcano (and that moment is not represented in the game). so he nearly was never great and will never be great, BUT he was and could be usefull.
thx to @Emmental who pointed out that the real unique ability from gollum is, that he is immun to cardeffects, so he do not increase his attack by shadoweffects. so he is a calculable 2 att enemy with high engagementcost.
who can benefit from a calculable 2 str attack?
with good healing its 2 res per attack, thats a bonussteward, thats a strategy to build a deck on.
things to think of:
- you do not know when he flipps, so include cards that benefit from his lore-res
- you do not know, who is startinggplayer when he flipps and he walks with the startingplayer, so gloin needs adjustment
- repeatable healing for gloin preferable from the start
- a deck that can make use of addditional ressourses, and is not lost, if he flipps late in the game
thats the result, a secrecy gloin-deck with hobbit and songs:
start
- mulligan for Timely Aid
- equip Glóin with The One Ring and Well Preserved payd by Sméagol (first planning phase he is usually around)
in the game:
- play Well-Equipped as soon you get it
- use Drinking Song with many cards as possible, if you can sneak a Gandalf for cards before that, do it
- use A Very Good Tale as soon you can, best with a Soldier of Erebor that comes with a Timely Aid. do not forget, he can refresh himself
- try to get the Song of Mocking early on gloin, then he can absorb the (undefended) dmg, gollum makes everywhere
- Rivendell Minstrel helps to find the song you need
- Song of Travel on gloin helps to pay for the Rivendell Minstrel
- if not accidentially discarded, you can build up willpower with Fireside Song on (MotK) Pippin
- Song of Healing on Glóin helps to get healing before the next round
- Elven-light helps to get cards for healing as long as Glóin get dmg
- additional hp for Glóin with Boots from Erebor and Ancestral Armor the remaining Ancestral Armor can go to a Soldier of Erebor
mid-lategame:
- Knight of Dale make use of additional res of Glóin
- Gandalf can reduce your thread
ending thoughts:
yes it has 55 cards, but that is o.k.
- 2 ring and well preserved
- 15 for A Very Good Tale
- 6 for Well-Equipped
- 3 songs from Rivendell Minstrel
- about 3x3 from Gandalf (+sneack)
- 6 start
- some from Sméagol and from King Under the Mountain
about 5-10 left for carddraw at start of the round. in a average 7-10 rounds enduring quest you need it all

it can heal unlimited damage, if no single attack kills Glóin. with 1 dmg gain, he can heal 2 (pay 1 res get 2 cards). idea was first used by seastan: ringsdb.com (for pure healing it works without elrond) so in combatheavy quests it will be needed in lategame. Lay of Nimrodel would be a good addition, #iilant guard only go to warriors (he is not) i like the Ancestral Armor more because its not dead on hand and think 7 hp are enouhgspecially if i can heal between attacks (with song + light) Treebeard is good, but i have him in so many decks, but definetly makes it better. |
Nov 29, 2022I am aware of that combo with Elven-light. However, I figured if you wanted to use it, you would include three copies of all the combo pieces. Running Halbarad, and a Spirit hero would make more sense then. If you want to use the combo, you don't need Sméagol or Secrecy. I assumed you wanted to avoid that broken combo, and would simply use Elven-light/Song of Healing for a bit of card draw. Good point on Vigilant Guard. You could include Mighty Warrior, but I doubt that's worth it. I would still include Citadel Plate. The chances of you getting Song of Healing and Elven-light are pretty low. |
Nov 29, 2022i disagree, you have 3 A Very Good Tale and 3 Drinking Song the probabilty either to get it on hand or discard it is good for Elven-light. the Song of Healing can be fetched by the Rivendell Minstrel. and you need that combo late so i think its overall not so unlikely to have it if you want it, when you need it. usung (MotK) Halbarad do not let you stay in secrecy for long, and Timely Aid and Dúnedain Wanderer are valuable parts of the deck. this deck has a flexibililty to react on different circumstances, and all buffs are not cruicial but wellcome and can support independent from each other (the secrecy-part is independent from the healing part) the 3 Rivendell Minstrel gives you the tools to decide, u need more questing? choose Song of Travel + fireside, you need more protection in multiplayer, get the Song of Mocking you want more big allies, get a Drinking Song to hope for another Timely Aid or A Very Good Tale and until Sméagol flipps, he help you with carddraw and res to gain your goals. beside that, adding a 2. Elven-light wont hurt but i would not take 3 |
Nov 29, 2022That's fair; thanks for explaining. I accidentally linked Halbarad instead of hero Halbarad. While that would remove secrecy, you could engage all the enemies, removing the need to find Song of Mocking. |
Nov 30, 2022if u want to go full-gloin-defense-the-table mode, thats better, but than i would not use smeaol at all. either start with (MotK) Ioreth or perhaps (MotK) Dori and do not care about secrecy an go more hp and more healing. this is more an allrounder that uses several tricks and try to make use of gollum. |
I would either add Lay of Nimrodel as a way to eat up late-game resources or cut Song of Travel. I doubt that Fireside Song or Elven-light is worth it. Consider Citadel Plate and Vigilant Guard, they are great with Well-Equipped. Treebeard is great too. Dwarven Sellsword would help with the first turn, and eat up late-game resources.
