Okay, Gollum Grey Wanderer.
I just wanted to see if it could beat a quest, so I played Passage through Mirkwood, a.k.a., Easiest Quest Ever. I almost lost. I don't even know if it was a legal win, as I don't know if the core set is part of the Mirkwood cycle. But... This deck did beat a Quest.
The idea is to swarm the allies, using Timely Aid and The Contract. If you have the choice, get Dwarves in and give them Dwarrowdelf Axe, War Axe, and Ring Mail. The should be your combat guys, with occasional help from Soldier of Isengard and Quickbeam.

Apr 08, 2021Actually, it's not an auto-lose. According to the rules, "A player is eliminated from the game if all of his heroes are killed, if his threat level reaches 50, or if a card effect forces his elimination." Even though Sméagol is flipped when Stinker is revealed, and thus leaves play, he is not killed. The last errata document makes this clear in the Q&A section: "heroes are not considered to be killed unless they are in your discard pile" (p. 12). |
Apr 08, 2021well my bad on Song of Travel and not considering card pool. the ruling is kind of disappointing, i find that willingly shuffling a "you lose the game" treachery in the encounter deck is the most hilarious way to assert dominance. well having him flip still is pretty bad when you have no other heroes, as without a hero you cannot play cards so if you do not have enough allies to beat poor smeagol back into his senses you have lost. |
Apr 08, 2021thats not right. you can play cards, with cost of 0. with grey wanderer the 1. is spherindependent. its not an aotoloose, specially if you have many allies out at that time. and, you can take evere attack undefended, because no hero get the dmg. i would add A Very Good Tale. as soon as you have 2 allies out it will accelerate. |
Apr 08, 2021Lol I gotta' say I love these types of decks! |
Apr 08, 2021Beat Road to Rivendell, so that's something! |
Apr 08, 2021
Also no A Very Good Tale, card pool again. |
Apr 08, 2021with grey wanderer-contract and undefended attack, see rules for undefended attack. no hero, no harm. but thats the only benefit. wothout hros no ressources and its hard to get more on the table without res. |
Apr 09, 2021Great idea ;) |
Apr 10, 2021Last year i played a Sméagol Grey Wanderer deck and managed to win Passage through Mirkwood without sweating. Journey along the Anduin was won on second try (first was bad luck with chief uftak on setup and gladden fields revealed first round...). You whould consider adding secrecy allies, Followed as a starting attachment for quest, and Doomed cards (Far-sighted is great for planning when Gollum will play and plan accordingly). |
Apr 10, 2021Card pool again! (; I can use Far-sighted, but I don't have Followed, and is Dúnedain Wanderer really worth it? |
Apr 10, 2021Nah imo. He has only 1 and in my games it was the most important stat. What about replacing the dwarves with eagles ? Note that Radagast continues to gain resources once Sméagol leaves and can help play eagle cards |
Apr 10, 2021I was going to try that, that would probably work better. The dwarves weren't very efficient, anyway. |
Apr 10, 2021or Beorning Skin-changer to summon a big bear. Beorn with his ability one shots smeagol. Or Giant Bear/Beorning Guardian+some help a Marksman of Lórien with a Rivendell Blade also does it Mirkwood Runner over two rounds works too as for the 1-cost starting attachment attachment, Entangling Nets, Ithilien Pit, Outmatched and The Long Defeat all can be played on any scenario. Ithilien Pit would be particularly efficient in this sort of deck with low threat (an understatement!) and attack oriented allies |

but i might have another solution for your problem here ringsdb.com i hope you like it |

Anyway, just today I made another version of this deck using eagles. I beat JAtA with a score of 171, and I was one threat away from threating out . I added Out of the Wild and was able to get both copies of Stinker in the victory display. |
you magnificent madman, you though there where not enough game ending threacheries ou there, you just HAD to add a litteral "you lose the game" treachery in the encounter deck...
at least have the decency to even ATTEMPT to play around it, with Song of Travel+A Test of Will or Firyal...
anyway, you have been added to my favorites, both your deck and you as a person.
