Who likes having a Giant Bear on their side of the battle? What about lots of Giant Bears?
Well, here they are!
BE WARNED, there is a strong chance you will be making growly bear noises when playing this deck.
This deck is designed to get the most out of the new Beorning cards and the big Daddy Bear himself, Beorn. Though there are multiple threads in this deck to make it fun and interesting to play throughout the whole game.
The first thread revolves around Osbera.
Beorn is the deck's initial primary defender and synergises with the new Osbera hero as she, when flipped, can divert the damage the Beorn will take with his 1 , splashing it onto herself and Birna to start with, thereby making a start on her pseudo questing. As more Beornings come out it is easy to get this pseudo questing up to 5 pretty quickly.
This deck in intentionally light on costs to fuel Osbera's flipping. For this reason Beorn's Welcome is probably one of 2 cards to Mulligan for as it will allow Osbera to flip for free. Deciding if a flip is necessary, or desirable is one of the key choices in the deck.
The second key card to mulligan for is Beorning Skin-changer as he will fuel your bears. This is the second thread to the deck. Use the Beorning Pony and Daeron's Runes to get Giant Bears into the Discard pile and skin change them into play, Grrrr. Don't be afraid to block with the Giant Bears because if they die we can just restart the loop (and grab some money with Descendants of Beorn).
Now for the third thread, and Birna gets her chance to shine. Dead bear? Use Birna to get you a Skin Changer back into play, and before you know it, we have a Giant Bear fresh and ready for action, without having to discard to Birna's effect!
The deck is rounded out with Honour Guards to keep Beorn alive. Defender of Rammas + Raiment of War for additional defence. Gandalf for threat reduction. Gléowine, Deep Knowledge, and Daeron's Runes for card draw.
Eagles are the natural allies of the Beornings and also will synergize well with the resource ability of Beorn's Welcome. This will provide the money for both Wilyador and Winged Guardian to stick around. Landroval is around in case we have to revive Beorn.
A smattering of traps finish off the deck, just coz I like traps.
If you like making bear noises when you kill things, then this is the deck for you.

Aug 21, 2022I totally agree that the Ranger Spikes are unnecessary, they are just in the deck because I like playing traps. Yes, willpower is an issue, the deck is intended to be more multi player focused, engaging and killing, with another deck doing the Willpower lifting. Thanks for the Pippen and Mablung suggestions. I've not really looked hard at the ALeP cards, so Seasoned Forager definitely deserves a look, thanks again |
Aug 21, 2022If you’re looking for traps, Forest Snare can be used to help control when Osbera flips. Just finish off the enemy when you’re ready to go back to Lore! |

Aug 23, 2022@Palantir Record Keeper I was treating this as read across from the ruling that Caleb Grace made for Honour Guard. In that it was ruled that Honour Guard targets the damage not the hero. As the wording on Osbera is the same (I think intentionally from the ALeP designers) then Osbera can target the damage going to Beorn whilst he, himself is Immune to Player Card efffects. |
Aug 27, 2022Yes, Osbera’s damage prevention is definitely designed to work with hero Beorn. |
It seems to me that Ranger Spikes is unnecessary as this deck is good with combat. However, I am guessing that it struggles with willpower. Thus, I would add Pippin and Mablung. Also, Seasoned Forager is insanely good.
