Disclaimer: it's a deck part of a Fellowship (see below) my gaming group is playing to tackle The Hobbit saga expansions thematically.
To go with the "5 Dwarf Fellowship deck", I opted for a more meta-recent "Mining Deck".
That deck can be stupidly fast and strong. Your two heroes from the Iron Mountains Dáin Ironfoot and his son Thorin Stonehelm with their discarding abilities are perfectly helped (cheated?) by Gandalf, that lets you see the top card of your deck. So yeah, you're seeing what you're discarding.
From there, especially if you can get those Dwarf Pipe and Wizard Pipe, discarding is a breeze, as managing your top card is, always seeing what it is, or returning a Hidden Cache or Ered Luin Miner on top of your deck if they are stupidly sitting in your hand. Worst case scenario? Discard blindly (mostly eh) and when you run out, play Will of the West.
Of course Erebor Guard, Ered Luin Miner, Zigil Miner, Dwarf Pipe, Well-Equipped, Hidden Cache are all there to support the mechanics.
That deck doesn't struggle with resources, so if you get the Gandalf's Staff out, don't hesitate to fuel the Thorin's Company deck with a few resources at start, getting that deck to 5 dwarves is really critical.
